This idea was courtesy of an online contest which invited artists to illustrate 99 red balloons, Alice/Through the Looking Glass, or a combination of the two. I knew I wanted to revisit my beloved mad trio, but it wasn't until sketching them in that it occurred to me how to include the balloons: An unbirthday party! (The balloons are redder in person; the scanner picked up on the background hue more than the bright red shading.)

I've always pictured the mad trio as fairly well-meaning, if totally insane. The March Hare just had to have a squinty, pirate eye--that, and the Hatter's hair is in his face. The perpetually sleepy Dormouse is yawning, not drowning in tea, though I imagine he's come close on several occasions. As for the Hatter, his fugliness was a delight to paint, and of course he had to be a nail-biter.
