Paintings: Welcome, Traveler

"Welcome, Traveler"
14 x 11"
Acrylic on canvas board

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
~George Santayana

Something that always fascinated me about the sphinx of Greek mythology is that she had multiple visitors/victims who thought they could best her despite ample evidence to the contrary. Suppose Oedipus hadn't come along? (Never mind that in defeating her, he sealed his infamous fate.) No doubt she'd be sought out on purpose even today. "Welcome, traveler," indeed.

The sphinx's face is thanks to silent movie actress Nita Naldi. The wings are from the griffon vulture, which is native to Greece and (I think) quite appropriate for a predatory, scavenging sphinx.
