Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid has long been one of my favorite stories, not the least because of all that the Disney version left out. The Sea Witch isn't an evil character, merely a practical one. She warns the little mermaid that she's being foolish, but as she's determined, the witch offers her services with indifference; the outcome is no never mind to her, so long as her skills are paid for. The original fairytale doesn't describe her as being specifically humanoid, so I thought this a wonderful excuse to paint my first octopus. While the Sea Witch works her magic, her clasping garden holds firm her treasures from above: a diving helmet, the skull from its land-dwelling owner, and messages in bottles.
If you've not read the original fairytale, you can find it here.
