The 2010 World Cup had two lasting effects on our household: 1) my husband and I became addicted to soccer, and 2) we became fascinated by Paul the Psychic Octopus, who would predict match winners by choosing between two boxes, both filled with identical treats and marked by the teams' respective flags. Several documentaries on octopi later, the interest hasn't let up. Indeed, the fact that Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid doesn't describe the Sea Witch as being specifically humanoid made for a wonderful excuse to paint my first octopus; my husband adopting one in my name at our local zoo was the excuse for this, my second. The crystal balls hold treasures--constellations--captured from above, from which this fortune teller must choose. Gesso board isn't the most forgiving of mediums, so the shading is more graphic than usual, but I'm rather fond of how this fellow turned out.
If you've not read the original The Little Mermaid, you can find it here.
