One.
When I painted my first "Make-Shift Angel" back in 2007, I didn't expect it to become a series, but time has proven otherwise. Indeed, they are my favorite paintings of my own and are quite often the most personal.
All Make-Shift Angels begin with the same six color mix for their skin. The ratio of said colors determines whether an angel will have a cool or warm tone, which (together with background color) decides whether they have dark or pale wings. I've debated combining the two types of angels for some time, only their solitary nature kept getting in the way. Over the course of many paintings, Make-Shift Angels have established themselves as intimate strangers who reveal their wounds but never their full faces. With "Unity," intimacy proved the key--to each other, they can reveal all. And so two became one, and the seam that binds them is not so strong as their embrace. My thanks to B. and T. Samani-Sprunk for modeling.
