"Meren"
10x10"
Screen print
Prints available: None. Sorry!
I am thy wife O Great One--do not leave me!
Is it thy good pleasure, O my Brother, that I should go far from thee?
How can it be that I go away alone?
I say: 'I accompany thee, O thou who did like to converse with me.'
But thou remain silent and speak not.
I shall never be far away from you
While my hand is in your hand,
And I shall stroll with you
In every favourite place.
Much as I love printmaking, it is very expensive, especially for starving artists/college students. Thus, when faced with not being able to afford the what I wanted to get my friend Jenna for her birthday, I decided to make her a print instead. As she is lovingly obsessed with Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhes, the choice of subject matter was obvious.
The top text is Ankhesenamun's lament at Tutankhamun's death; the bottom text is from an Egyptian love poem that I thought would be a suitable reply. Between the two lovers shines the Aten, the god whose reign they were both born under. As for the title, "Meren" is the ancient Egyptian word for "Love."
