I was invited to take part in the Alice in Wonderland Art Jam, an international project that aims to convey the entirety of "Alice" using only pictures--no words of any sort are allowed, even on items in the scene. Each artist is assigned a paragraph to illustrate, and mine was paragraph #155.1:
"But what am I to do?" said Alice.
"Anything you like," said the Footman, and began whistling.
"Oh, there's no use in talking to him," said Alice desperately: "he's perfectly idiotic!" And she opened the door and went in.
Scene summary: Alice has arrived at the house of the ugly Duchess and her psychotic cook, whose cacophony and smoke can't be missed even outside. A frog Footman is waiting to deliver a letter (recently passed to him by a Fish footman--my eternal love to this book) but seems happy enough to sit and stare at nothing.
The entire project will be published in black and white, so I chose to work with the same. Alas, some of the more delicate tones were lost in scanning; I corrected the contrast as best I could. I wish I'd been a bit more daring with my Alice's appearance, but I am absurdly fond of my dim-witted frog. Since frogs have no lips, mine has a whistle so that he can, well, whistle!
(FYI, the artists involved retain full rights to their work, so I'm happily allowed and able to offer prints of this piece.)
